Facebook Introduces Another Oculus Virtual Reality Headset

Facebook has unveiled a stand-alone virtual reality headset created to extend the appeal of the company's Oculus technology to the masses.

It rolls up all of Rift's existing menus and UI into a central hub that's instantly accessible from anywhere in VR-all built natively for Touch. Dash is a central hub that incorporates all the old Oculus interface elements into something you can access from anywhere in VR, designed for motion controllers. The company promises natural and unrestrained movement while the headset deliver PC-quality VR.

There are two types of headsets available on the market: those like Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream View, which require a smartphone to operate, or rigs like Oculus Rift that work with expensive PCs.

But Gartner analyst Brian Blau said Oculus executives still realize VR will not capture a larger audience right away. "That's why we were so excited to share our early work with Santa Cruz at Oculus Connect previous year", wrote Oculus Facebook in a statement following its announcement.

What will it cost? But it doesn't sound like the entire Gear library is coming to Go. Gear VR apps will be compatible with Oculus Go from day one and uses the same controller. All of the hardware components have been moved to the front part of the headset.

Integrated spacial audio for the Oculus Go. Developers will start receiving kits for the Go sometime in November. No phone also means the headset could be lighter and more comfortable to wear. In terms of design it will ship with a mesh fabric and an elastic strap.

He also addressed a common criticism of VR - that it can be isolating.

In the social sphere, Oculus has released a new Avatar SDK that opens up the newly redesigned VR avatars to developers, allowing them to bring those digital alter egos to their own games and apps.

Oculus finally figured out how to get consumers excited about virtually reality: It just had to take a little bit of advice from the late Steve Jobs.

The new headset will cost $200 compared to $400 for the Rift. Now, though, you get all of that in a convenient and relatively affordable package.

Oculus Go simultaneously solves both the price and complexity issue.

"The problem is you will be spending that money on a device that only does VR and nothing else".
