Sunni Waqf Board rejects Sibal's plea

Sunni Waqf Board rejects Sibal's plea

Sibal had, yesterday, demanded for the next hearing in the case to be held only in July 2019 after the completion of the next Lok Sabha polls, citing political ramifications.

Sibal had in the apex court said that the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute should be heard after the 2019 general elections, which triggered a major political storm. He, however, noted that the Congress has said the views expressed by Sibal, who represents the Sunni Waqf Board in the case in the Supreme Court, were his own. "On one hand, he is visiting all the temples in Gujarat and trying to misguide the Hindus and on the other hand another, a Congress leader is trying to extend the hearing date of the Ayodhya dispute hearing", Adityanath told ANI.

Addressing a Press conference at Ahmedabad, Shah said a surprising stand was taken in the SC by Congress leader and Sunni Waqf Board lawyer Sibal that hearing should be deferred till after 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The stakeholders in the case had moved the apex court after the Allahabad HC directed the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and the Lord Ram Lalla to settle for a three-way division of the disputed site.

The Supreme Court had fixed the next hearing for the long-standing matter for February 8, 2018.

Another party to the case, Haji Mehboob said he also wanted early disposal of the matter and did not approve of Sibal's stand. His statement in the court was wrong. "You want to keep the issue unresolved for political gain and losses in the elections?"

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), which is not a party to the case, however, favoured deferring the hearing till after the next general elections claiming that the time was not right for the same now.

Meanwhile, the Congress Party had, on Tuesday, furthered the war of words with the BJP and said it was raking up non-issues just to garner votes. "We have got nothing to do with his statement".

BJP chief Amit Shah tweeted that the Sunni Waqf Board stated that they don't agree with what Sibal said in court. "They are least bothered about the nation", Modi said.
