Apple to acquire Shazam for around $400m, says report

Apple to acquire Shazam for around $400m, says report

A deal between Apple and Shazam is in the works, with the former buying the latter very soon.

"We have heard that the deal is being signed this week, and will be announced on Monday", reports Techcrunch, who broke the story, "although that could always change".

Users of Apple's iPhone with the Shazam app installed can say: "Hey Siri, what's that song?" and the app will identify it. More recently Shazam has developed augmented reality technology that allows users to point their phones at a special label to see additional information.

For over other 1 billion downloads, Shazam has been familiar in its independence of around 19 years.

But the price TechCrunch reported may disappoint those investors, as it would fall far below Shazam's most recent $1 billion valuation reported by PitchBook.

Apple is known for buying up other companies, though Shazam is certainly no small startup. Moreover, Shazam is used to name a song, television show, movie poster, magazine ad or AR content.

The acquisition could be a smart move for both Shazam and Apple.

The deal is as per reports, approximately of $400 million, confirmed by the Recode. So Apple must think the brand itself has value, and it's reasonable to assume it will integrate the feature into its iOS operating system.

Shazam CEO Rich Riley previously told Business Insider that the company would make sense insider a larger company looking for a foothold in music or advertising. Last year, they only made $54 million and lost $5.3 million. "And, of course, with Apple's war chest, it can afford to make bets that may pay off in a big way or may not matter much in the long run".
