'Man flu' may be a real thing, says doctor

For instance, he cites epidemiological data from Hong Kong showing that men were more likely than women to be admitted to a hospital for any reason between 2004 and 2010, and a US study that found higher rates of flu-related deaths for men than for women between1997 and 2007.

The term "man flu" might be something you're hearing for the first time - but probably isn't something completely unknown to you.

For example, a 2008 study found that women had a stronger immune response to the flu vaccine, meaning they produced greater levels of antibodies against the virus strains in the vaccine, compared with men.

It's a term mocking a man's ability to handle the flu, but a Canadian doctor is throwing his support behind the phenomenon that men are affected differently when they fall ill and argues it's due to weaker immune systems. But men somehow tend to bemoan those symptoms more than that of women, hence the name - man flu.

"It's a frequently heard stereotype", said Dr. Kyle Sue, author of the study and an assistant professor of family medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada.

Despite this research, a study commissioned by Well Pharmacy claimed that women reckon their partners embellish their "illness" when suffering from man-flu. On the other side, female hormones could boost it. Here's everything you need to know about a new study's shocking findings.

He said his evidence suggests they really are more likely to be left bedbound by their illness.

Cultural disparities, such as the lower access women have to health care or the comparative over-hospitalization of men and boys, might account for the data that Sue suggests points to the existence of "Man Flu", believes associate professor at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, Sabra L. Klein.

This theory could be tested with a clinical trial that divides men infected with a respiratory virus into two groups: the fate of men left to "fend for themselves" would be compared to outcomes of men whose every request is "met by a healthy designated caregiver", Sue proposed. It also pushes back against the idea that men crumble at the first sneeze - pointing to a study which found women were more likely than men to cut down activities when it came to minor respiratory illnesses. "Contrary to popular belief, and this article, the vast majority of robust scientific evidence suggests that flu is not sexist", said Stokes-Lampard, who was not involved in the research. "Is it that women are more resilient, that they are able to juggle more when they are ill, or is it that they don't have as severe symptoms?"

If a man complains of having a cold or flu it's high time one must take it seriously for a study reveals that men have a weaker immune system.
