Some Irish-based Ryanair pilots to strike on December 20 - union

Ryanair, which does not recognise trade unions, said in a statement that it has not received notification of any industrial action by its Dublin pilots or a strike date and that it suspected the ballot was "more PR activity" by IALPA.

Italian pilots have already scheduled a four hour stoppage between 1pm and 5pm on Friday.

Union official Ashley Connolly said, "Management's failed negotiating model has let down shareholders and tens of thousands of passengers whose flights were cancelled this year because company-controlled industrial relations proved incapable of recruiting and retaining enough pilots". "We see no other way", Vereinigung Cockpit president Ilja Schulz told reporters in Frankfurt.

In response, Ryanair Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michael O'Leary ridiculed Mayor's comments by publicly referring to Mueller as "Mad Mike".

Labor leaders across Europe are making an aggressive unionization drive for better working conditions at Ryanair, challenging a low-priced business model that helped make the Irish company the region's biggest budget airline.

Pilot support in Dublin, the discount carrier's second-biggest base after London Stanstead, advances an organizing drive that has already led Italian pilots to declare they plan to call a strike on December 15 for four hours.

The pilots, whom IMPACT said were mostly captains, will withdraw their labour on December 20 in a strike the union predicted will either disrupt flights or generate substantial costs to the airline. Employees have also formed local labor councils in Spain, Sweden, Portugal and the Netherlands.

The Cockpit union said that walkouts in Germany can be expected "any time starting immediately" but didn't give any specific timing.

Ashley Connolly, an Impact official, said: "This dispute is exclusively about winning independent representation for pilots in the company".

"Ryanair will deal with any such disruptions if, or when they arise, and we apologise sincerely to customers for any upset or worry this threatened action... may cause", the company said.

In a statement, Ryanair said its pilots are free to join a union, the company is also free, under both Irish and EU law, to decline to engage with (competitor pilot) unions.

Ryanair said less than 28 percent of its 300 Dublin pilots voted in favor of labor action. A crew shortage in September partly stemmed from rivals including Norwegian Air poaching its pilots.
