Republicans Slam Mueller, FBI And Justice Department Over Charges Of Bias

Cohen said he completely agreed with Rosenstein's stance on Mueller and said he believed everyone in Congress agreed as well, noting that Mueller's appointment and reappointment as Federal Bureau of Investigation director were unanimous.

And while Rosenstein received something of a cheat-sheet of anticipated questions from House members' daylong interrogation of FBI Director Christopher Wray last week, answers to fresh calls for a second special counsel to investigate the Justice Department will fall to Rosenstein on Wednesday.

There have also been questions about bias on Mueller's team because many members have donated to Democratic campaigns.

Rosenstein gave Mueller a broad mandate to investigate any links or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with Trump's campaign, as well as any matters that may arise directly from the investigation.

At that point, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) chimed in and said he did not: "I didn't; I don't".

The anti-Trump text messages, and other examples of what Republicans call bias, have fueled a coordinated campaign by Republicans to try to damage Mueller and his office as much as possible.

The texts seen by the AP began in the summer of 2015, soon after the FBI launched its email server investigation, and continued over the next year and a half as the presidential race was in full swing and as Trump and Clinton were looking to defeat their primary challengers and head toward the general election.

Strzok was removed from Mueller's team in late July when his bosses found out about the texts. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) asked. By that time, Page already had left for unrelated reasons, officials have said.

Republicans in recent months have attacked Mueller, who has so far charged four Trump associates in connection with his investigation into whether Russian Federation meddled in the USA presidential election a year ago and colluded with Trump's campaign. Rosenstein said that Mueller had taken appropriate action in taking Strzok off the team.

The Republicans want the second special counsel to investigate alleged political partisanship in the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, report the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.

Grassley said that communications between FBI Peter Strzok and lawyer Lisa Page provided to the committee by the Justice Department showed the officials referring to President TrumpDonald John TrumpHouse Democrat slams Donald Trump Jr. for "serious case of amnesia" after testimony Skier Lindsey Vonn: I don't want to represent Trump at Olympics Poll: 4 in 10 Republicans think senior Trump advisers had improper dealings with Russia MORE as an "utter idiot" and a "loathsome human". Nadler said that request was "grossly misguided". This being the case, today's hearing is likely to focus on Peter Strzok, the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent on Mueller's team who was recently reassigned in light of his negative commentary about President Trump. Rosenstein said he was hopeful the inspector general would conclude his investigation "in the next couple months", adding, "When we get those results, we'll take appropriate action". His appearance on Capitol Hill is part of the House Judiciary Committee's normal oversight of the Justice Department.
