Four injured in New York City blast, suspect nabbed

Four injured in New York City blast, suspect nabbed

The reported blast, near Eight Avenue and 42nd Street, was of "unknown origin", police said in a statement. "It was two distinct explosions seconds from each other".

NY is on high alert ahead of the holidays, which culminate every year with the giant New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square, attended by hundreds of thousands of revellers. The New York Police Department's bomb squad was deployed to the scene. NY state Governor Andrew Cuomo, speaking at a news conference near the site, described the device as "amateur-level".

Police Commissioner James O'Neill said it was a "terror-related incident", CNN noted, while Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed it as an "attempted terrorist attack", according to Time.

Police have a 27-year-old suspect identified as Akayed Ullah, in custody, Time reported. A photograph showed a man lying facedown, with tattered clothes and burns on his torso.

The blast took place in an underground passageway at the Port Authority subway station, the authorities said.

"It was scary. It was just a lot of chaos but I didn't see any injuries".

"They didn't incite panic", Miles said.

All MTA trains are bypassing the Port Authority and 42 St. stops as police investigated the incident.

Ullah apparently traveled overseas to Bangladesh in September and returned in October, a law enforcement source tells CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton.

At the White House, spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters, "This attack underscores the need for Congress to work with the president on immigration reforms that enhance our national security and public safety".

Authorities think Ullah intentionally detonated a pipe bomb-based device that was strapped to his body with Velcro and zip ties during rush hour, NBC News reported. It accommodates 220,000 passenger trips a day. He exited the vehicle and an officer shot him.

Ullah had a black cab/limousine driver's license from 2012 to 2015, after which it expired, the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission said. Saipov pleaded not guilty to 22 federal counts.

Policemen stand guard at the site of the blast in NY, the United States, on December 11, 2017.
