New York Bombing Suspect Mocked Trump On Social Media Before Attack

New York Bombing Suspect Mocked Trump On Social Media Before Attack

Akayed Ullah, who is accused of detonating a homemade explosive in a pedestrian subway tunnel at a bus terminal near Times Square, was born in Bangladesh but legally moved to the USA in 2011.

The wife was questioned in Bangladesh and told investigators that her husband discussed Rahman's writings with her during his last visit home, Islam said. She said she was evacuated from the terminal after the explosion and had to wait outside the bus terminal for about two hours.

Police spoke with Ullah's family in Brooklyn's Flatlands section. "His wife didn't know anything about this side of Akayed", Ferdous said.

According to the U.S. Census' 2016 American Community Survey, there are about 90,000 Bangladeshis in New York City, out of a nationwide population of about 234,000.

Ullah has no criminal record in Bangladesh, according to Ferdous.

Akayed Ullah said little during the hearing, which lasted a little over 10 minutes. The federal law enforcement source said Ullah's travel overseas was not significant for the planning of the attempted attack. Ullah lived with his mother, sister and two brothers in Brooklyn and was a green card holder, said Shameem Ahsan, consul general of Bangladesh in NY.

Whether Ullah triggered the bomb intentionally in a pedestrian tunnel at the Port Authority bus terminal, or if the device malfunctioned, has not been established.

On grainy surveillance footage, commuters are seen walking through a tunnel when a burst of smoke erupts into the hallway, quickly filling it. Commuters flinch and take cover.

Four other people suffered minor injuries. He sustained injuries, including burns to his hands and abdomen, and was taken to Bellevue Hospital. Because it was strapped to Ullah, the assumption is that he had been prepared to die a suicide bomber.

Linked to a Manhattan federal courtroom by video, Ullah was shown with his head propped on a pillow and a white blanket covering his torso where, police say, he strapped a crude explosive device he made following instructions on the Internet. He said he acted in response to Israeli actions in Gaza.

Ullah started collecting materials for the bomb two to three weeks before the bombing, and started building the device about a week ago, the complaint says. Kim said a search of Ullah's Brooklyn apartment revealed metal pipes, pieces of wires and metal screws consistent with the bomb materials recovered at the scene. Ullah peered straight into the camera with no discernible emotion, speaking softly when he affirmed he could see the judge and saying, "Yes I have" when asked whether he had seen the complaint that charges him with five federal terrorism counts, including use of a weapon of mass destruction and bombing a place of public use.

USA law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation said Ullah had looked at Islamic State group propaganda online and told investigators in the United States he was retaliating against US military aggression, but had no direct contact with the group.

President Donald Trump said he'll end US immigration programs that give preferences to the families of new residents and that allow people to enter a lottery for visas, policies the White House blames for a bombing in NY on Monday.

Trump has called on Congress to end the diversity immigration lottery, which provides visas to people randomly chosen from countries where there is a low rate of immigration to the United States.

The Trump administration this fall barred most citizens of several, mostly-Muslim countries from entering the US on national security grounds.

"Today's terror suspect entered our country through extended-family chain migration, which is incompatible with national security", Trump said Monday.

"We need to be able to select the types of people that are coming here based on criteria that ensure their success".
