Sonia Gandhi retires as India Congress celebration president

Sonia Gandhi retires as India Congress celebration president

"We depend on you to transform and sustain the politics of hope", Singh said.

India's Rahul Gandhi took over Saturday as president of the main opposition Congress, becoming the sixth member of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty to head the party that has ruled the country for much of its independent history.

Ms Gandhi who has been the acting Congress President for 19 years addressed the party workers as she took over the podium to congratulate the newly anointed party chief and her son.

"What is new in it?" Senior leaders like Mr Ramesh Chennithala, Oommen Chandy and M.M. Hassan, who attended the programme, said that the Congress party was on a revival path. But today, politics is not being used to uplift people, but to crush them.

Taking a jibe at ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he added that once a fire is lit it is hard to diffuse.

Outside the 24, Akbar Road, Congress Headquarters, a group of colourfully dressed artistes played drums and danced to Punjabi bhangra tunes with party supporters, including men and women, shaking a leg or two and waving Rahul Gandhi's pictures and Congress flags. Adding that they ran a pro-people government, she said, "In the first few years of my presidentship, we started as a responsible Opposition to save the constitutional values which we learned during the freedom struggle".

The Modi government has been under fire in the past several months for an increase in inter-faith violence, including attacks by vigilantes largely targeting Muslims for allegedly consuming beef or killing cows which are sacred to Hindus. "You have chosen Rahul as your leader… I am proud of his endurance and firmness and I am confident he will lead the party with a pure heart, patience and devotion", Sonia said.

Hitting out at Modi, Gandhi said that the prime minister believed that his was the voice of reason whereas even expertise, experience and knowledge could be cast aside for personal glory. We consider the BJP as our brothers and sisters, but we do not agree with them. "We will fight the politics of anger and hate and defeat it", he promised.

Attacking the BJP, he said, "these regressive forces" don't win because they are right, they do not win because they stand on the side of what is correct, "they win because they are powerful".
