Allardyce reacts to 'brave' Everton after fourth consecutive home win

Allardyce reacts to 'brave' Everton after fourth consecutive home win

Everton's revival under Sam Allardyce continued with a 3-1 victory over bottom club Swansea City helped by a stunning Gylfi Sigurdsson goal at a foggy Goodison Park as they moved up to ninth in the Premier League on Monday.

Swansea took the lead after a flat start to the game, Ashley Williams at fault from Tom Carroll's corner as Leroy Fer was left unmarked to finish well.

The Iceland worldwide, who left the Swans in a £45m summer move, scored the vital second after Dominic Calvert-Lewin had cancelled out Leroy Fer's opener by converting Wayne Rooney's saved penalty on the stroke of half-time.

"I was never going to give that penalty up", Rooney said.

Just 12 points from 18 matches, and more worrying just 10 goals scored, leave the Welsh club four points from safety after just one win and four points from their last 10 league matches.

Swansea had scored the same number of league goals as Rooney - nine - at kick-off and its lack of attacking confidence was demonstrated when Luciano Narsingh shot straight at Jordan Pickford.

Everton were awarded a second penalty after 73 minutes, which Swansea complained about with some justification.

Everton looked short of inspiration but they got on level terms just before the break when they were awarded a penalty after Aaron Lennon went down under Roque Mesa's challenge.

And Rooney got his goal in the end when converting his second spot kick of the night after Martin Olsson brought down Everton full-back Jonjoe Kenny.

Sigurdsson's shot was claimed by Fabianski despite an awkward bounce after 58 minutes, but the Iceland global put Everton in front with his next effort.

After Rooney found him on the left flank, Sigurdsson cut inside on to his right foot and unleashed an unstoppable drive past Fabianski and into the far corner of the net in the 64th.

Allardyce has overseen three wins and a draw from four Premier League games since taking charge at Goodison Park, but the ex-Sunderland and West Ham manager still sees room for improvement.

Key Opta stats - Everton has picked up 13 points from its last five Premier League games, one more than it managed in its previous 13 games.

Rooney's effort was tipped onto the post by Lukasz Fabianski - the 10th time in 32 attempts England's record goalscorer has failed from the spot in the Premier League - but Calvert-Lewin converted the rebound. Then in games you need something special and Gylfi provided that.
