New York Islanders' Belmont Park arena bid approved, per report

New York Islanders' Belmont Park arena bid approved, per report

New York Arena Partners, which includes representatives of the Islanders, Madison Square Garden, and the New York Mets, wants to construct an 18,000-seat arena for the Islanders, who now play at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

As it stands, the process is down to two sports-related proposals.

Plan A includes an 18,000-seat arena that would hold 150 events annually, which would include concerts and other special events besides National Hockey League games.

The Isles' development partners are Sterling Project Development, which is run by the Mets' Wilpon family, and Oak View Group, which is partially funded by Madison Square Garden.

Multiple sources have said that New York State has awarded the team the right to develop the Belmont site.

The Islanders are contractually obligated to play at Barclays Center through next season, and owner Jon Ledecky confirmed that's exactly what they will do.

The Islanders played at Nassau Coliseum, about 10 miles from Belmont Park, for 43 years before moving to Brooklyn in 2015.

The Islanders or Barclays Center can opt out of their lease agreement in January.

It's a day that hockey fans in NY have been waiting a long time for, partially because it has major implications for the team's chances of re-signing superstar center John Tavares.

Barclays Center officials months ago made a proposal for the Islanders to utilize Nassau Coliseum as a temporary venue until the new arena is ready, according to a person with knowledge of the talks. Tavares, 27, the face of the franchise since he was selected first overall in the 2009 draft, could become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to be in attendance.

New York City Football Club and Related Partners wants to construct a 26,000-seat open-air soccer stadium for the Major League Soccer team, which now plays its home games at Yankee Stadium. Their proposal called for a 26,000-seat soccer stadium, as well as a retail village similar to the Islanders' proposal.
