Magic Leap's Creator Edition AR Headset Announced for 2018

Magic Leap's Creator Edition AR Headset Announced for 2018

The goggles consist of three parts: the actual goggles which beam light into your eyes to create the images you perceive, the computational brain/battery that you strap to your body somewhere, and a handheld controller. The startup was founded in 2011 by Brian Schowengerdt, Randall Hand, Rony Abovitz and Sam Miller. Magic Leap said it uses Lightfield Photonics to generate digital light that blends seamlessly with the real-world lighting.

Magic Leap's futuristic goggles, which support environment mapping, precision tracking and soundfield audio, look like nothing we've seen previously, and have reportedly been engineered to be lightweight and comfortable for hours of "exploration" (Oasis here we come!).

The company said it will let users interact with digital content in the real world.

Magic Leap announced its first product on its website, magicleap.com https://www.magicleap.com where visitors can see a demonstration. The new device is slated to begin shipping in 2018, and should offer a similar feature-set to Microsoft's HoloLens. In October, Magic Leap raised $502 million in a funding round led by Temasek Holdings, Singapore's state-owned investment company.

The second big issue with the HoloLens is cost, and when it comes to the Magic Leap headset, while the company would give an exact pricing, they did say "we are more of a premium computing system". Magic Leap managed to keep the headset compact by separating the compute module from the headset.

More traditional AR applications, like those Apple and Google are pushing for smartphones, are also touted, but of course they should be much more immersive when used with a Magic Leap headset. Sign up and be the first to know about partnerships, promotions and when Magic Leap One is available.

Magic Leap's hardware appears to be geared for software makers.

On the tech front, Magic Leap promises Lightwear goes beyond the simple stereoscopic 3D that still powers most virtual and augmented reality. Magic Leap wrote, "Our integrated processing unit delivers high-fidelity, gaming-quality graphics, with the power and performance of a laptop computer". Magic Leap's digital lightfield technology provides the visuals users will see as they look through the headset.

Magic Leap's Lightwear device is a far cry from the bulky, face-hugging platforms that have become popular in VR, instead using wraparound steampunk-style goggles.

While Magic Leap has slated a release of the Magic Leap One for sometime next year, the company remains relatively cagey about access to the product. The company today revealed the "creator edition" of the Magic Leap One, it's much anticipated augmented reality system.
