Theresa May ally Damian Green resigns from UK Cabinet

Theresa May ally Damian Green resigns from UK Cabinet

Theresa May sacked Damian Green, her deputy prime minister and closest ally, tonight after he admitted making "inaccurate and misleading" statements about pornography found on his parliamentary computer.

Green was one of May's closest allies, and she said she was "extremely sad" at his resignation.

Green was appointed in the wake of her disastrous bet on a June snap election which lost her party its majority in parliament.

The Prime Minister in a letter wrote that she had asked Green, her effective deputy, to resign.

A former journalist, Green was first elected to parliament in 1997 and rose through the ranks to become work and pensions secretary past year under May.

"From the outset, I have been clear that I did not download or view pornography on my Parliamentary computers", Green said in his resignation later.

The Ashford MP was asked to step down as First Secretary of State for breaching the ministerial code.

The Cabinet Secretary said that with "competing and contradictory accounts of what were private meetings" it was "not possible to reach a definitive conclusion on the appropriateness of Mr Green's behaviour with Kate Maltby in early 2015, though the investigation found Ms Maltby's account to be plausible".

In his resignation letter, Mr Green apologised for his actions.

The inquiry was subsequently expanded to consider claims that legal pornography was found on a computer removed from Mr Green's office in the House of Commons in 2008.

"While I can understand the considerable distress caused to you by some of the allegations which have been made in recent weeks, I know that you share my commitment to maintaining the high standards which the public demands of Ministers of the Crown".

In her response, May expressed "deep regret" at his departure.

They praised their 31-year-old daughter for her courage in speaking out about the "abuse of authority".

In his letter, Mr Green said he accepted statements he made about what he knew about the pornography investigation could have been "clearer", conceding his lawyers had been informed about the original discovery in 2008 and the police had raised the matter within him in a phone call in 2013.

Mr Green has been an MP since 1997, rising through the shadow cabinet ranks to ministerial posts in the home, justice and work and pensions departments.

Former Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon and ex-International Development Secretary Priti Patel both stood down in November.

May was given the findings of the Cabinet Office investigation on Monday and passed it onto Alex Allan, her independent adviser on ministerial standards, who agreed with its conclusions, The Telegraph reports.
