Wednesday in CE: The Amazon, Google Feud May Be Getting Uglier

Amazon has filed two trademark requests with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for "Amazontube" and "Opentube". The trademarks requests described Amazontube or Opentube as providers of "non-downloadable pre-recorded audio, visual and audiovisual works via wireless networks".

In the midst of Google's abandon of cross-platform propriety - a fake Windows app, for one, and, more importantly, with the Fire TV losing out on YouTube from January 1 - Amazon could be hedging against the company with its own social video service. While these could easily mean anything, there's a good chance that these are names for an upcoming video streaming service from Amazon.

In short, it looks like Amazon intends to at least test out a competitor to YouTube.

The discovery of these trademark filings doesn't really guarantee that Amazon will launch a YouTube rival.

In case you missed it, Google and Amazon have had an ongoing feud for some time, highlighted by the debacle surrounding the Echo Show.

It will be interesting to see how Google responds to a similar service by Amazon. But whether or not the company opts to go directly head to head with YouTube, the suggested names do feel like Amazon's rattling the cage a bit and setting itself up for a likely legal challenge from Google over a name that hedges a bit too close to its insanely popular video platform. DomainNameWire reported earlier this month that Amazon has been registering a lot of domain names, including AlexaOpenTube.com, AmazonAlexaTube.com and AmazonOpenTube.com. It seems as though the two companies are willing to talk things through before YouTube is completely removed from Amazon's devices.

Amazon's filing with the USPTO is dated December 5th, which lines up precisely with the news of Google pulling the plug on YouTube support for Amazon's devices.
