Apple confirms it deliberately slows down old iPhones

Bogdanovich claims Apple's decision to slow the operation of older phones to save battery life was never requested or agreed upon. and it lowers the value of their phones.

Apple said it released software past year that makes those models operate more slowly to countervail problems with their aging lithium ion batteries, which can sometimes cause operational problems or cause phones to unexpectedly shut down. Last year's update acts as a workaround by slowing down the performance of phones with older and low-charged batteries.

If you've got an older phone and want the best performance, consider getting a battery replacement done - $119 at Apple Stores, and you'll find other "mobile doctors" offering the service cheaper I'm sure.

Apple has further delved into the issue of lithium-ion batteries on its website, which have a limited life span.

Shaw's Freedom (TSX:SJR.B) - which has its network primarily in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia - wasn't able to carry the Apple 8s and newer iPhone X until this month. The company presumes that typical users are more likely to be impacted by battery life reductions than a small loss in compute performance. The company faced a backlash over revelations that it has throttled the performance of older phones this week, with some not buying the company's explanation and others complaining about the lack of transparency.

Older iPhones could risk being damaged or randomly shutting down if the company hasn't introduced performance-throttling software updates, the tech site says.

Needle said he would be surprised if Apple isn't the defendant in a class-action lawsuit soon.

According to the spokesperson, the company released a feature a year ago for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE that is created to "smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down".

The iPhone doesn't start flashing an alert when your battery is in trouble - it just starts to curtail your phone's processing power. "Couldn't figure out why, but just thought that iOS 11 was still bad to me". If you're going to slow down the phone over time, you should explain why it is happening, so people understand it is ultimately for their benefit.

The company says it has extended the feature to the iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2 and plans to "add support" for other products in the future. Phones used to abruptly shut themselves off if too much was asked of their decrepit batteries, since that helped protect sensitive electrical components.
