Jewish Groups Condemn African National Congress' Downgrading Ties with Israel

Jewish Groups Condemn African National Congress' Downgrading Ties with Israel

The African National Congress (ANC) in North West welcomes the resolution made by South Africa's ruling party during its national conference to expropriate land without compensation, provincial secretary Dakota Legoete said on Thursday.

Meanwhile 10 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since U.S. President Donald Trump announced the decision last month, Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported Wednesday, while hunderds have been injured in clashes with Israeli police and occupation forces.

It said the downgrade "will send a clear message to Israel that there is a price to pay for its human rights abuses and violations of worldwide law".

The unanimous vote - held at a meeting of the ANC's worldwide relations commission during the party's Elective Conference - means that the country's embassy in Tel Aviv could soon be reduced to a "Liaison Office".

During the final few days of the ANC biannual National Conference, the party unanimously passed the resolution to turn the embassy in Ramat Gan into a "liason office". It is also a downgrade of support for the local Jewish community and a folded hand on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"These procedures do also help in the extremist organisations to wage a religious war that would harm the entire region, which is going through critical moments and would lead us into wars that will never end, which we have warned about and always urged to fight against", Palestine's president, Mahmoud Abbas, said in a televised address following the United States announcement, according to a CNN report. There is generally anger across the board about land, no one who lives in South Africa can deny that fact.

The main event at this week's ANC conference was the election on Tuesday of South Africa's Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa as the party's president, following a hard-fought campaign against his opponent Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
