CEO, More Resign Amid Ongoing Miss America Scandal

CEO, More Resign Amid Ongoing Miss America Scandal

The top leadership of the Miss America Organisation, implicated in an email scandal that targeted past pageant winners for abuse based on their appearance, intellect and sex lives, resigned on Saturday, with the outgoing president apologizing to a victor whose weight he ridiculed. He was joined by chairman Lynn Weidner, president and COO Josh Randle, and board member Tammy Haddad.

"This afternoon, the Board of Directors of the Miss America Organization accepted the resignation of Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Sam Haskell, effective immediately", interim chairman of the board Dan Meyers said in a statement.

The president, Josh Randle, told The Associated Press his comment responding to an email to his private account about the physical appearance of 2013 victor Mallory Hagan came months before he started working for the Miss America Organization in 2015. Randle will remain in his current capacity for several weeks at the board's request to facilitate a smooth transition, the spokesman said.

The shakeup is the result of a Huffington Post on leaked emailed in which he discussed Miss America winners, the sex lives and their bodies using crude language - or was on emails where others were doing so.

With the exception of a short sojourn to Las Vegas from 2006 to 2013, the Miss America Pageant has been a staple of Atlantic City for decades with the traditional "Show Us Your Shoes" parade along the boardwalk where contestants display footwear representative of their states. The outgoing president apologized to Hagan nonetheless, saying in the statement that the comment does not reflect his values or those of the Miss America Organization.

"I feel awful, but this is the right thing to do", he said.

Haskell and been suspended the previous day by the organization, which said it would conduct an "in-depth investigation into alleged inappropriate communications and the nature in which they were obtained". By then, it was too little too late, as the MAO moved swiftly to remove him, Weidner and Randle.
