Google celebrates the solstice in both hemispheres

Google celebrates the solstice in both hemispheres

After December 21, the nights will begin to get shorter as our planet rotates towards the sun. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

December 1: The meteorologists say winter started weeks ago.

The winter solstice, also known as Yule, Midwinter, marks the beginning of the astronomical winter, but it's not the coldest day of the year.

"Though most refer to the solstice as an entire day, in reality, the solstice is defined as a single moment: when the sun is directly above the Tropic of Capricorn". This year the December solstice is reached at exactly 16:28 GMT and 11:28 Eastern time on Thursday, and 00:28 China Standard Time early on Friday.

Even though winter is the coldest time of the year for the Northern Hemisphere, the Earth is actually the closest to the sun, according to NOAA. The sunlight causes the mouse to start wearing sunglasses.

In English, the world solstice comes from the Latin word solstitium, meaning "sun standing still".

While the shortest day can be kind of a bummer, it has a little silver lining: It means that from here, sunlight will stick around longer and longer.

The winter solstice may be the shortest day of the year, but that doesn't mean you'll have an early sunset. The city will see nine hours and 15 minutes of daylight as well. Astronomers maintain that winter solstice marks the end of autumn and the start of winter.

The exact times of sunrise and sunset depend on two things: your latitude and geographic location within your time zone.

Do you like darkness? Tomorrow it will be at 4:44 p.m.

Today's Winter Solstice 2017 Google doodle brings back the animated mouse that has made an appearance on Google's homepage for each of the equinox and now both solstice dates. The 23.5-degree tilt of Earth's axis is responsible for the seasons.

That for many spots in Alabama falls in January. Oceans and bodies of water - which take longer than land to heat up and cool down - keep temperatures from rising very fast. But the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun and receives less solar energy.

HollywoodLifers, are you a winter person or a summer person? That's definitely something to celebrate!
