IPhone Battery: Slow Down or Die?

IPhone Battery: Slow Down or Die?

Apple admitted in a statement that they were purposefully slowing down the older iPhones in order to ensure better performance and also prevent unexpected shutdowns. And this is the choice Apple made: let the phone just run at full speed and kill the prematurely aged batteries or slow down the phone so the battery would last longer. On Wednesday, the company confirmed it was degrading the devices' performance by saying that in 2016 it had introduced an algorithm for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE, preventing the devices from shutting down when an older battery inside is unable to keep up with the required power. The user wrote about his experience on Reddit, showing that after the battery replacement his phone scored around 2X more points in Geekbench, a benchmark that measures the performance of a processor. The pair said they never consented to Apple slowing down their phones.

The other lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles on Thursday by Stefan Bogdanovich, claims that the company's practice harms users who didn't agree to it. Bogdanovich, whose case focuses on iPhone 7 owners, says Apple slowed down older iPhones to force people to upgrade, though Apple has said this isn't the reason.

Furthermore, the company claimed that its software updates for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, iPhone SE and iPhone 7 are created to "smooth out" peak power demands, prevent these surprise shutdowns and ultimately prolong the lifespan of batteries. The throttling only kicks in if your phone has an inefficient battery. The ability to renew your device through software is exactly why iPhone owners see their phone choice as a good investment and hold on to it.

Perhaps in recent years you noticed your iPhone slowing down as it got older, especially when the battery was running low. Apple charges $79 to replace batteries not covered under the phone's warranty. The suit alleges Apple violated consumer fraud laws. Apple has also squashed the theory that the throttling is done to push the sales of newer iPhone models and instead claim that it was to accommodate the effect of degrading lithium-ion batteries. I think that would have gone a long way toward helping people understand.

If Apple openly spoke about this "feature" there would have been no controversy, and conspiracy theorists wouldn't have had the field day they are having right now.
