Amazon buys smart-home start-up Blink, deepening its rivalry with Google

Amazon buys smart-home start-up Blink, deepening its rivalry with Google

The main difference is that Blink's products work wirelessly, while Amazon's existing options usually need to be plugged in.

Highlighting its growing ambitions in Internet-connected home devices, Amazon has acquired wireless security camera startup Blink. Blink further positions itself as the value smart doorbell provider with a promise of "free cloud storage", which shouldn't be confused with unlimited (you'll likely be restricted to just a few days or weeks of video).

Blink is best known for its wireless security cameras which originally launched on Kickstarter before quickly receiving over $1 million in funding. The campaign was a success, with Blink raising five times the amount it initially targeted. This makes Blink's system, which will stick around following the acquisition, much easier to set up than competing products, as the hardest part about installation is picking out a place to put the device. It has also reportedly worked on a smart doorbell that would give delivery drivers one-time access to a customer's home, which would theoretically reduce lost and stolen packages.

It's not hard to see, therefore, why Amazon might have been interested. No financial details about the acquisition have been disclosed.

Walmart, meanwhile, is testing a system that would sync up with home security cameras to let delivery workers leave groceries in your home fridge.

For Blink customers, changes doesn't seem to be coming immediately.

In a message on its website, Blink said that "if you own one of our systems, nothing changes for now". We'll continue to operate under the Amazon umbrella selling and supporting the same great products you know and love.
