Attack fears prompted UAE-Tunisia female passenger row

Attack fears prompted UAE-Tunisia female passenger row

The Tunisia transportation ministry said that it "has chose to suspend flights of Emirates Airlines to and from Tunisia until the company can find a suitable solution to operate its flights in accordance with global laws and treaties".

The Tunisian Ministry of Transport responded on Sunday by suspending all of Emirates Airlines' flights to the country, "until [Emirates] can find a suitable solution to operate its flights in accordance with worldwide laws and treaties".

Tunisia late on Sunday suspended flights from Dubai carrier Emirates to Tunis, with officials saying the airline was refusing to carry female Tunisian travellers. The local reports termed the measure "temporary and relating to security arrangements".

Despite the clarification, Tunisian rights groups issued a statement on Saturday condemning the UAE measures as "discriminatory and racist".

According to AFP news agency, some Tunisian women said their journeys to the UAE had been delayed and some that their visas had to undergo additional examination.

A row between Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates was triggered by fears of terrorist attacks, Tunisia says.

Qrash noted that the UAE made their decision based on "credible security information", but did not confirm that this was the reason behind the UAE decision.

UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Anwar Gargash tweeted on Sunday that an agreement was reached with Tunis over the security measure. "We highly value Tunisian women and respect them".

Tunisia has been trying to fix diplomatic ties with the UAE damaged by its 2011 revolution and after the Islamic party Al-Nahda, which has strong links with Qatar, came to power in the North African country.
