An early snowfall and the timing of Christmas Eve are partially to blame for low collections in Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign this year.

This year the Salvation Army will give out 250 toys to needy children in the county, but Major Wright says that sadly this is an increase on last year as more families in need come forward.

The event drew a large crowd from the community and was highlighted with a choral performance by local members of The Salvation Army, retelling the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.

"The volunteers have put aside some of their own time on Christmas Day to come and help others in the community to ensure they have an enjoyable and memorable Christmas day".

Helen Wiedenfeld stuck out the cold weather in front of Walgreens in Fox River Grove to close out the season Saturday for The Salvation Army red kettle campaign.

"We have a challenge ahead of us, but with the continued support and generosity of our community, we know we can do it!" The organization also holds after-school programs and music lessons, and offers other social and youth programs.

"Doing the most good" may be the Salvation Army's motto, but some locals will tell you kindness runs strong everywhere in the Old Pueblo. After getting some immediate help, he was directed to the adult rehabilitation center in Charlotte.

"I want (Kiersha and Brayden) to learn how blessed we are, and how every kid isn't as fortunate as they are", he said. The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5 percent of all eligible AmazonSmile purchases to The Salvation Army.

Her Christian faith helps her to look on the positive side of life, she said.

Christmas meals were also being enjoyed The Square as a family served up a barbecue lunch near the clock tower, and at Wholegrain Organics, which opened its doors for a free family-style meal.

FOX10 talked to a volunteer of 26 years who isn't letting some health problems ruin her Christmas spirit. "It's the second one we've gotten tonight".

Even people who don't respond to her greeting sometimes give, she said. "He had pretty much everybody crying at that point".

"I've been known for my outlandish outfits", Novy said. "The Salvation Army is a wonderful place".
