A bus left a road in Moscow before ploughing into a subway entrance, leaving four people dead and 11 injured, Russian officials say. All the victims of the accident were pedestrians, a police source said.
There were also unconfirmed reports that some 15 people had been injured.
The bus driver operating the vehicle told investigators that the bus started moving suddenly and that he applied the brakes, but they did not work. It has a broken windscreen and smashed windows along the left-hand side, which scraped the barrier of the walkway.
Passengers on-board and people walking on the steps near the Slavyansky Boulevard metro station were killed, police said.
Terrorism is not being considered, it is understood, but the driver was detained by police.
Interfax news agency reported that the bus was not even a year old. Footage shows people scattering as the bus ran down wide steps before being brought to a halt by the tunnel's roof.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus swerved into a pedestrian area, where people were walking. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that two of those hospitalized are in critical condition.
