North Korea says United Nations sanctions are an 'act of war'

China called on Monday for all countries to make constructive efforts to ease tension after North Korea said the latest United Nations sanctions against it are an act of war and tantamount to a complete economic blockade.

The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved tough new sanctions against North Korea on Friday in response to its latest launch of a ballistic missile that Pyongyang says can reach anywhere on the US mainland.

The Foreign Ministry in Pyongyang said the latest sanctions were a violent breach of North Korean sovereignty and that countries supporting them "will be responsible for all the consequences".

The resolution adopted by the Security Council includes sharply lower limits on North Korea's refined oil imports, the return home of all North Koreans working overseas within 24 months, and a crackdown on ships smuggling banned items including coal and oil to and from the country. This amounts to nearly 90 per cent of...

Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said the resolution appropriately strengthened the sanctions but was not created to affect ordinary people, normal economic exchanges and cooperation, or humanitarian aid.

The rogue state slammed the complete economic blockade and has threatened to punish those who support the sanctions.

"The United States, completely terrified at our accomplishment of the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force, is getting more and more frenzied in the moves to impose the harshest-ever sanctions and pressure on our country".

The North Korean Foreign Minister has stated that the country will continue to develop its nuclear program "for self-defense purposes" to protect itself from "hostile" acts by the US.

North Korea on Sunday rejected the resolution, calling it an act of war. The White House and National Security Council did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

North Korea on November 29 said it successfully tested a new ICBM that put the U.S. mainland within range of its nuclear weapons.

Following the vote, US President Donald Trump said the "world wants peace, not death!"

Experts said it seemed to be a significant advancement, adding North Korea's claims about the Hwasong-15's range and carrying capability should be taken seriously. "We will make sure forever and ever that they pay a heavy price for what they have done".

Following the launch, a North Korean official told CNN Pyongyang was not interested in diplomacy with the U.S. until it had fully demonstrated its nuclear capabilities. The other was the "testing of a long-range ICBM", the implication being this had been achieved with the most recent launch.

In a series of talks with troops throughout the day, North Korea came up time and again, mostly from the troops.
