Should Disney Be Worried About 'The Last Jedi's' Massive Box Office Drop?

Should Disney Be Worried About 'The Last Jedi's' Massive Box Office Drop?

The tentpole's worldwide take totaled $14.8 million on Monday. It's a climactic moment in the film preceded by roughly 10 seconds of silence-but, apparently, several moviegoers interpreted Johnson's creative decision as a technical glitch or premature end to the movie.

In Lucasfilm's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: The Last Jedi". Writer and director Rian Johnson turned in a mature story that moved the Star Wars plot forward in a lot of unexpected ways. Debuting in a distant second place was Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle with a decent $55.4 million to show for its opening weekend. The threequel brought back the Bellas singing group with Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp and Hana Mae Lee reprising their roles. The latter is going to be a very busy market this week with Jumanji, Coco and countryman Hugh Jackman's The Greatest Showman all taking their Oz bows. "Pitch Perfect 3 " also opened with $9.8 million in 14 global markets. Pitch Perfect 2, directed by Elizabeth Banks, followed on May 15, 2015 and rang up an outstanding $69 million in its first weekend. Downsizing opened in seventh place with $4.6 million and is expected to finish around $6 million domestically by Christmas night. Since its debut, the film has earned $163.5 million through Monday in North America. This year is especially important if the revenue gap at the domestic box office is to come in only 1 or 2 percent behind 2016's record $11.4 billion.

These three new releases collectively earned less than "The Last Jedi" since opening on Friday. The comedy Father Figures made a laughable $5.5 million in its first week of release, which was good enough for a tie Darkest Hour, but was more than likely disappointing for a film the studio probably expected better results from as it looks to disappear from the top ten next week altogether.

And the third weekend of Guillermo del Toro's "The Shape of Water" earned $4.3 million, with a total of nearly $8.9 million through Monday.
