Donald Trump Tweet-tacks Vanity Fair For "Regret" Over Hillary Clinton Ding

Donald Trump Tweet-tacks Vanity Fair For

Liberal elite magazine Vanity Fair says it is very sorry it offended its subscriber base by suggesting Hillary Clinton move on with life and take up new hobbies like knitting.

Vanity Fair released the video as part of a series suggesting New Year's resolutions for others, including White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and U.S. President Donald Trump.

"Take up a new hobby in the New Year: volunteer work, knitting, improv comedy - literally anything that will keep you from running again", writer Maya Kosoff said in the video, while drinking from a champagne flute.

A spokeswoman said: "It was an attempt at humour and we regret that it missed the mark".

Mr Trump took to Twitter on Friday morning (AEDT) saying the magazine was "bending over backwards in apologising for the minor hit".

Mr Trump's tweet added that Anna Wintour "is beside herself in grief & begging for forgiveness!" Adam Parkhomenko, a former Clinton adviser, went so far as to tweet out a photo of the magazine engulfed in flames.

Many have claimed the video was sexist and the hashtag #CancelVanityFair was trending.

Actress Patricia Arquette responded, "Hey STOP TELLING WOMEN WHAT THE F-- THEY SHOULD DO OR CAN DO".

A number of liberals came to Clinton's defense.

The comment made reference to a Clinton supporter who ran into the defeated candidate while taking her daughter for a hike in the woods just days after the election.

Trump has a long-standing feud with Vanity Fair's former editor, Graydon Carter, who announced in September that he would step down by year's end.

He then took a shot at Anna Wintour, the Vogue editor who serves as artistic director for Vanity Fair parent company Conde Nast. In an April 1988 issue of Spy magazine (which Carter co-founded), Trump was famously referred to as a "short-fingered vulgarian".

Trump said the publication was now "bending over backwards" to apologize.

Before the president addressed it, the story hadn't received much coverage beyond online media, save for the outlet that inspires many of his tweets: Fox News.
