Female comedian sued after refusing men entry to a 'women-only' show

Female comedian sued after refusing men entry to a 'women-only' show

George filed a lawsuit against comedian Iliza Shlesinger, alleging her no-men-allowed "Girls Night In" show was in violation of California's anti-discrimination law. Rava compares the instance to injustices perpetrated during the Civil Rights Movement and describes Shlesinger's actions as a "war on men".

The plaintiff said he and his friend had purchased tickets for the event held at Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles.

At first, theater employees told St. George and his male friend they would be allowed to attend the show, but had to sit in the back row, despite there not being assigned seating, the lawsuit states.

The comedian is being sued after banning men from her shows. George says he was turned away and offered a refund once the venue began letting ticket-holders in.

And his lawyer for the case, Alfred Rava, also has experience with such cases - telling CNN he's filed 150 sex discrimination suits in just the past twelve years. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff said Schlesinger had changed her mind and only wanted women in the audience. That act says people in the state are "free and equal", regardless of gender, sex, race, religion and sexual orientation, among other identities.

He added that Iliza's show "repudiated hundreds of years of women's struggles to be viewed as being equal to men and is typical of old-fashioned sexism that might also advise a young woman that her best chance for a happy life is to ace her home economics class and learn how to make a queso dip from Velveeta to catch a good man".

Rava has built his career suing companies and organizations for what he believes is male-based gender discrimination. There's no word on what kind of damages St. George is seeking or whether or not Iliza plans to fight this suit in court instead of settling, but this has the feel of a very contentious public battle that will turn at least a few heads in the comedy community. He wants an injunction on the comic from ever treating consumers differently based on sex and to undergo sensitivity training.

Shlesinger "denied consumers the equal accommodations, advantages, facilities privileges and services they were entitled to" by denying St. George and his friend exclusively because their gender, the lawsuit argues.
