Tesla to make pickup truck after Model Y crossover

Tesla to make pickup truck after Model Y crossover

While chatting with customers via Twitter Tuesday, Tesla co-founder Elon Musk let it subtly slip that the next Tesla Model will be a pickup truck. He went on to note that he's had the concept for the pick-up truck done in his mind for almost five years. Am dying to build it, "stated Elon Musk in a tweet posted on 26 December replying to Twitter user Vancouver Seed Bank". Intriguingly, Musk followed that up with another tweet that said the Tesla pick-up would be similar in size to the Ford F150: "Maybe slightly bigger to account for a really gamechanging (I think) feature I'd like to add".

Deliveries of the Model 3 to non-Tesla employees just started in the last two weeks-a mere six months after "production" began on the sedan. The tweet hit a sweet spot for people who are fans of both Tesla and pickups, scratching an itch that has generated a number of theoretical renderings of what a Tesla pickup truck might be like - including a complete photo gallery.

For the most part, however, Musk promised that Tesla would be releasing smaller software-based improvements, like rain-sensing windshield wipers (a function that has been on the back burner for some time), better maps and navigation, and browser updates. It will be called a successor to Tesla's Model 3, which includes hot-selling vehicles including Sedan.

So, what could those mysterious features be?

Musk had also said before that the design of the pickup truck should be unveiled with the next 24 months.

Musk has floated the idea of a Tesla pickup truck before. Tesla is still working to get several vehicles to market, including its Roadster and Semi. The company has a daunting list of 450,000 Model 3 reservations to churn through, and even bullish analysts of the company expect it to fall well short of Musk's production goal for 2018 of 500,000 vehicles.
