Another Arctic blast ahead of for the New Year

Another Arctic blast ahead of for the New Year

We will see warmer temperatures this afternoon, as highs climb into the upper 40's with mostly sunny skies and light and variable winds. Expect highs to reach the mid 50s. According to weather.gov, patchy freezing fog could develop once again overnight leading to slick roads, bridges and overpasses. Highs are expected to stay in the low to middle 30s New Years Day, with some locations especially north struggling to rise above freezing.

An Arctic high pressure moving in on New Year's Day will continue to bring in frigid air. Preparations should be completed sometime today through Saturday in order to avoid rain and the extreme cold.

The work week wraps up with cold and cloudy conditions.

There is some hint that light precipitation could also accompany the Arctic cold front, but the probability is now only 20 percent.

It's important to note that significant adjustments may be necessary with this forecast for both temperatures and precipitation. Mornings will be in the low 20s early next week and some spots may briefly dip into the teens. Keep this in mind of you have New Year's Eve plans; outdoor events will likely need to be moved indoors or canceled. With such a difference in models, though, confidence is low, but worth mentioning considering the holiday. Air temperatures will fall to the teens and wind chills will make it feel close to 0.

On Wednesday, East Texas temperatures should rebound to the mid 20s at night, and the 40s during the day.

Temperatures will moderate some over the weekend, but the overall look of the long-range pattern remains colder than normal. Keeping the forecast dry after New Year's Eve. That's 36-48 hours below the freezing mark, so take precautions to protect pipes, plants and pets in that timeframe.
