First Supermoon Of 2018 Happens On New Year's Day

First Supermoon Of 2018 Happens On New Year's Day

In spite of the fact that a supermoon appears somewhat bigger in the sky than a full moon, the distinction is nearly incomprehensible for most people to see.

However, this time around the blue moon will occur on the same night (or morning, depending on where you are) as a total lunar eclipse.

Most months have just one full moon, because the twenty nine day cycle of the moon matches up pretty well with the length of calendar months.

A supermoon occurs when the moon becomes full on the same day that it reaches the point in its elliptical orbit when it is closest to Earth.

The new year will ring in with a pair of unbelievable celestial sights, with supermoons that will be visible on the first and last of January. For those in NY, the full moon will make its first appearance at 9:24 p.m.

In short, stargazers are in for a treat this coming New Year's Day thanks to the second supermoon that's coinciding with the event, but the third supermoon on January 31 is arguably the moon that people can't afford to miss.

Finally, the supermoon, or second full moon of the month, will take place the night before the second full moon on January 30. The moon will be 223,068 miles, 358,994 in km from Earth. It appears larger due to an optical illusion.

"Blue Moons happen every two and a half years, on average", the space agency's website reads. On the night of January 30th, a blue moon will rise for much of the world, reaching fullness at approximately 8:27am EST on January 31st. These happen about twice a year, when the the moon lines up with the Earth and Sun so that Earth totally blocks the sun's light that we see reflected on the moon.

January's supermoons will be just the latest in a spate of supermoon events taking place in close succession.

However, there are some around the globe who won't experience it until the morning of February 1, which means it technically will not be a blue moon for them.

That's because the January 31 supermoon will coincide with a total lunar eclipse, which will give the moon a reddish glow due to the sunlight reflected by the Earth's atmosphere.

But, if you're in California, you're in luck. The event will begin at 5:51 a.m.
