Johnny Manziel approved, eligible to play in Canadian Football League in 2018

Johnny Manziel approved, eligible to play in Canadian Football League in 2018

The Canadian Football League said Thursday it would approve a contract for quarterback Johnny Manziel if one is reached with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who have the former Heisman Trophy victor on their negotiation list.

After working out for Hamilton, Manziel activated the team's 10-day window, which forced the Tiger-Cats to either sign, trade or release him.

Manziel's CFL rights are owned by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who worked him out in September. The deliberation has included an "ongoing assessment" of Manziel's involvement in an alleged domestic violence incident with his former girlfriend and an in-person interview between he and Ambrosie.

It appears that Manziel has met the conditions that were presented by Ambrosie and the CFL, and now he'll have a chance to revive his football career if he can convince a team to sign him.

"As a result of this process, the Commissioner has now informed Mr. Manziel and the Tiger-Cats he is prepared to approve a contract for Mr. Manziel should one be negotiated". It's important to not let the laypeople be the only part of the decision-making process.

"We appreciate the CFL office and Commissioner Randy Ambrosie's due diligence in this matter", the Tiger-Cats stated. Mr. Manziel has been informed he must continue to meet a number of conditions in order to remain eligible. The statement read in part: "These conditions, while extensive and exacting, remain confidential".

The NFL quarterback has not seen any game time since he was released by the Cleveland Browns in March 2016 and, after being drafted in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft, he has played just 14 games over two seasons, Sports Illustrated noted.

After Manziel had talks with the Tiger-Cats last summer, Ambrosie initiated a review process to determine whether the embattled quarterback would be eligible to play in the CFL.

Hamilton (6-12) finished third in the East Division previous year and missed the playoffs. After ruling Manziel ineligible for the 2017 season, the league announced that Hamilton would hold his rights until November 30 before extending it again into January.
