More Rollovers: Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots total almost $700M

More Rollovers: Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots total almost $700M

Almost $700 million in lottery jackpots will be up for grabs, starting with Friday night's Mega Millions drawing.

First up is the Mega Millions drawing at 11 p.m. ET on Friday.

Louisiana lottery spokespman Dustin Annison says the numbers are historic.

The Mega Millions jackpot has grown since October 17 and has rolled 21 times. The $306 million jackpot is already the 13th largest in Mega Millions history.

The idea was to go longer between jackpot winners, and to thus increase the size of the top prize.

There hasn't been a Mega Millions jackpot victor since before the October 31 change of odds, a string of 21 straight drawings. Annison says he's hoping to see a repeat win for the state. The new optional $3 wager Just the Jackpot allows players to receive two entries for a chance to win the game's jackpot prize only.

But Joshua Haffner of Haffner Law (https://haffnerlawyers.com), who has handled two of the largest lottery fraud cases in United States history, warns super large jackpots can bring unanticipated disputes.

The move was similar to one made by Powerball in October 2015.

At 1-in-88 quadrillion, the odds of winning both jackpots are not in your favor.

The odds of winning the jackpot in that game decreased from 1 in 258.9 million to around 1 in 302.6 million, although officials have said the changes will create higher jackpots and give players better odds of winning secondary prizes like $1 million. That's more than they spent on movies, video games, music, sports tickets and books - combined.
