Erica Garner, Activist and Mother, Dies at 27 Following Coma

Erica Garner, Activist and Mother, Dies at 27 Following Coma

Activist Erica Garner, whose father's death helped galvanize an emotional discussion about race and policing, died on Saturday, New York's WABC reported.

Garner's mother, Esaw Snipes, tells the Daily News she's in a coma but there's a "glimpse of hope" she could recover.

She recently received $163,600 as part of the city's $5.9 million wrongful-death settlement with the family, according to distrubution records.

"I will always love you my sister. love you", read a statement via Erica Garner's official Twitter account.

In December 2014, a grand jury decided not to indict the New York Police Department officer who put Eric Garner in a chokehold, Daniel Pantaleo. His last words were reportedly "I can't breathe".

"Even with my own heartbreak, when I demand justice, it's never just for Eric Garner", she wrote in a Washington Post op-ed previous year endorsing then-Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

Sanders in a series of tweets on Saturday sent his condolences to Garner's family, characterizing her as an "exceptional young woman" and "fighter for justice" who will not be forgotten.

A message posted on her Twitter account said she had brain damage "from lack of oxygen while in cardiac arrest".

"My thoughts are with Erica Garner, her family and friends in hoping that she has a full recovery and rejoins the struggle for justice as soon as possible". She was also very critical of the Democratic Party, the war on drugs and systemic oppression in urban communities.

A number of Black Lives Matter activists and prominent politicians have praised her life and fight over the past few days.

"Erica Garner's death is a awful tragedy". The march ended at the spot where her father died, and brought together several social activist organizations. Then for her own life.

"It's just sad to see her laying there and not the active Erica that we know", Sharpton said. All this for being Black in America. "Her heart was attacked by a system that would choke her dad and not hold accountable those that did it".
