Cardinals' quarterback Carson Palmer retires after 14 National Football League seasons

Cardinals' quarterback Carson Palmer retires after 14 National Football League seasons

On Tuesday, Palmer announced his retirement in an open letter to Cardinals fans.

Palmer had his best season with the Cardinals in 2015.

The announcement comes just one day after former head coach Bruce Arians also announced he would step away from the NFL.

The idea of retirement is nothing new for Palmer, as Kyle Odegard of the Cardinals website noted in June that Palmer thought about hanging up his cleats during his 12th, 13th and 14th years in the league.

Palmer was acquired from the Oakland Raiders on April 2, 2013, for a 2013 sixth-round pick and a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

He had a stellar season, with career highs in yards, touchdowns and quarterback rating, and was named a Pro Bowler for the third and final time.

Why is Palmer calling it a career? They don't have any other quarterbacks on the roster for 2018.

He helped lead the Cardinals to a 26-20 overtime win over the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Round, him and Arians' lone playoff win in the Valley. This season, with Palmer's injury and key players like David Johnson and D.J. Humphries landing on injured reserve, there wasn't much hope for Arizona. He sat out the rest of the season after breaking his arm against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection (2005, 2006, 2015), Palmer finishes his National Football League career with 46,247 passing yards, good for 12th all-time at the time of his retirement. He finished with six seasons of more than 4,000 passing yards and was one of the better quarterbacks in the league when he was healthy and playing at his best.

The Cardinals had aspirations of building on that season's success in 2016. Drew Stanton, Blaine Gabbert and Matt Barkley all are due to become free agents.
