Alexa turns personal chef with oven control

Alexa turns personal chef with oven control

Meanwhile, Apple delayed the shipment of its $349 HomePod speaker until this year, missing the key holiday shopping season for electronics.

More news on what products will have Amazon Alexa and when they will be rolled out will be announced during CES next week.

"While content providers and other TV manufacturers tend to focus on quantity of content, Hisense recognizes that the future is all about simplicity, making it easy for consumers to find and watch their favorite content, play music, control their smart home and more", said Mark Viken, Hisense USA Vice President of Marketing.
The seemingly big addition is Amazon's Alexa smart assistant. That'll change in early 2018, when Amazon broadly rolls out Alexa purchases and subscriptions. Today we are excited to introduce cooking capabilities as part of the Smart Home Skill API. They may also use the various Alexa skills available and suggest specific products when users are asking about something. This allows companies to set up voice routines for things like video conferencing, create their own private voice skills, and manage the Alexa commands that employees can use. Still, Canalys expects the market to experience a huge boost this year as hardware vendors, software developers, voice recognition providers and operators join the game, capitalizing on the growing consumer awareness of smart home and artificial intelligence. Instead of pressing multiple buttons to enable advanced microwave features, users can simply use their voices.

First, the updated Smart Home Skill API will support microwave ovens. For example, a customer can say "Alexa, defrost three pounds of chicken" or "Alexa, microwave for 50 seconds on high".

The functions won't work with existing microwaves, so manufacturers will have to build new smart ovens to support Alexa.

Amazon got a head start this year in moving Alexa from speakers to screens, first with the 7-inch Echo Show smart display, and then with the diminutive Echo Spot alarm clock.

Amazon has also announced that the Alexa Fund, its venture capital arm, is investing in June Life, the company behind the connected June Oven. Do let us know in the comments.
