Apple: Mac And iOS Vulnerable To Meltdown And Spectre Flaws

Apple has warned owners of its iPhones, iPads and computers that the devices are affected by a processor flaw that could leave them vulnerable to hackers. Because these processors and their architecture is commonly used on almost on smartphones, laptops, computers, etc it means every single known device is vulnerable to these exploits.

APPLE has admitted that all of its Macs, iPhones and iPads are affected by the two newly-discovered major chip security flaws that are said to impact all Intel CPUs of the last ten years.

"All Mac systems and iOS devices are affected, but there are no known exploits impacting customers at this time", the firm said in the statement. Guess what! Apple has already released mitigations in iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2 to help defend against Meltdown.

It said the AppleWatch is not affected by Spectre.

Macs and iOS devices are vulnerable to Spectre attacks through code that can run in web browsers including Apple's own Safari. The company has also issued updates on iOS, MacOS, tvOS to protect customers against these flaws. Apple Watch is not affected by Meltdown. Apple said it would issue a patch to its Safari web browser for those devices "in the coming days". Also, the company will continue to develop and test further mitigations for these issues and will release them in upcoming updates of iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

There is no evidence that the flaws - which affect computer processors built by Intel and ARM - have been exploited by hackers, though companies including Microsoft have been working to provide fixes.

As far as it matters for its, Intel said in an announcement on Thursday that it "has created and is quickly issuing refreshes for a wide range of Intel-based PC frameworks-including PCs and servers-that render those frameworks invulnerable from the two endeavors... detailed by Google Project Zero", whose specialists helped unobtrusively find the defects a year ago.

Security researchers revealed the existence of the flaws on Wednesday, which could allow crooks to hack most computers or devices made in the past decade.

Spectre is an exploit that breaks the isolation between different applications on chips from Intel, AMD and ARM, and potentially allows hackers to "trick" error-free programmes that normally follow best practices into "leaking" their secrets.
