Country icon, Mickey Gilley, recovering after automobile accident

A family member of country legend Gilley, 81, confirmed the singer and his son were involved in a auto accident Wednesday morning in Corrigan, located in Polk County northeast of Houston.

A statement from Gilley's publicist on Thursday said the two were injured Wednesday when their auto rolled over near Corrigan, Texas.

The Gilleys were headed home to Branson, Mo., following an event in Texas, when the accident occurred.

Michael Gilley's wife, Susan, reported that Mickey Gilley sustained a broken ankle and shoulder in the accident, while Michael is sore, but unharmed. The 81-year-old artist fractured an ankle and his right shoulder. According to the report, another driver ran a stop sign in front of the 2013 Toyota SUV Michael Gilley was driving.

Gilley's January 6 show at the Texas Theatre in Greenville will be rescheduled.

On Thursday (Jan. 4), he updated his fans in a Facebook video message saying, "I am having a hard time walking because I have a big boot on my left leg". He plans to resume performances on January 20 at the Orange Blossom Opry in Weirsdale, Florida.

He says he has no plans to retire and will be back on the road soon. He swerved to try to avoid the other vehicle but ended up clipping it, causing the SUV to roll over and land upside down in the median. He was put on the national radar when his song "Room Full of Roses" was picked up by Playboy Records and topped the country radio charts. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, he earned numerous more No. 1 hits; the movie Urban Cowboy helped move his career forward as well. He fell down and a sofa fell on top of him, crushing four vertebrae.
