Death toll in terrorist attack in Kabul rises to 20 people

So called Islamic State have claimed responsibility for the blast.

A suicide bomber struck a convoy comprising Afghan security forces in Kabul Thursday night, killing at least 15 people, health ministry officials confirmed.

As security forces arrived, a Reuters reporter saw four police vehicles carrying dead or wounded security personnel from the scene. The Emergency Hospital in Kabul said in a tweet that at least 20 wounded were brought to their surgical centre after the explosion.

On Thursday afternoon, dozens of locals and shopkeepers launched a protest in the area to reject the allegations against them which said they sell alcoholic drinks in their shops.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack and ordered an investigation into the blast, a statement from the presidential office said.

In the past few months the Taliban have also stepped up attacks.

"This gruesome attack underscores the dangers faced by Afghan civilians", rights group Amnesty International said in a statement from its South Asia Director, Biraj Patnaik. "In one of the deadliest years on record, journalists and other civilians continue to be ruthlessly targeted by armed groups".

Earlier, the police said 11 people, including five police personnel, were killed.
