Father says Ryan Shazier has regained feeling in legs

Father says Ryan Shazier has regained feeling in legs

When asked by Sylvester if he had seen his son walking, Vernon Shazier said that would remain "private" for the time being.

Vernon Shazier, a pastor who recently began giving sermons again, recalled wanting to switch positions with his son when he first saw the injury.

There has been little update from either Shazier or the Steelers on his condition, but there was some optimistic news from Shazier's father Thursday, as WPXI-Pittsburgh spoke with Vernon Shazier and learned that the linebacker has regained feeling in his legs. After spending a couple days in Cincinnati immediately following the injury, Ryan Shazier was transported back to Pittsburgh where he underwent a spinal stabilization procedure.

On whether Ryan Shazier is walking yet: "I don't want to go into it a whole lot", his father said.

Shazier underwent spinal stabilization surgery on December 7, three days after he was injured on "Monday Night Football" vs. the Bengals while making a tackle with his head down.

"He said, "Daddy, pray for me".

Shazier's father expressed hope that his son would soon work with the team again. Shazier watched the team's Week 15 matchup with the New England Patriots from a Heinz Field suite, causing a roar from the home crowd when he appeared on the giant video screen there. Shazier has subsequently visited the team's practice facility in a wheelchair, but the Steelers and his family have made few details public about the progress of his recovery. Shazier helped Pittsburgh's defense become one of the top units in football. We do not know what tomorrow holds.
