Amazon 'Very Likely' To Join The Premier League Streaming Rights Race

Amazon is getting serious about streaming the world's best soccer matches. Juniper expects costs for the Premier League rights to soar by more than 40 percent over the previous three-year packages because of increased competition from Amazon and other well-heeled tech giants like Facebook.

Move over Sky Sports and BT, Amazon have held talks with the Premier League over their UK TV rights ahead of next month's auction. Incumbent Sky Sports will likely do everything it can to keep its exclusive arrangement with the league in tact, and several other entities are likely interested as well - including USA tech giants like Facebook.

The American company have refused to comment on the matter, but it is reported that they are seriously exploring the option of bidding for the Premier League rights between 2019 and 2022.

The pair took big financial hits when they paid a record £5.14bn for domestic Premier League rights in 2015 - nearly £2bn more than they sold for in 2012.

Industry experts believe Amazon could bid for new packages which allow them to stream all games taking place on certain Bank Holiday or midweek matchdays. Broughton said he has been told that Amazon wants to add more sports. Prime is the service that offers Amazon customers video and music content as well as free delivery for a raft of consumer items, including groceries, for 79 pounds a year in the United Kingdom and $99 a year in the U.S. In the US, where Amazon has the most Prime subscribers, members spend nearly twice as much per year as Amazon customers who aren't Prime members, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, which conducts quarterly surveys of Amazon shoppers.

The Premier League is expected to offer seven packages in total in the auction, with 200 matches available in total.

Rumors of Amazon's interest in streaming Premier League matches have been swirling for months.
