Clinton Foundation probed by Federal Bureau of Investigation again

Clinton Foundation probed by Federal Bureau of Investigation again

He said Attorney General Jeff Sessions was doing President Trump's bidding to distract from the Russian Federation probe. "None of this has made us waver in our mission to help people", Minassian said.

The investigation, led by the FBI field office in Little Rock, Arkansas, is being overseen by the U.S. attorney's office in the state, according to the source.

Various news reports, however, have raised concerns about donations to the Clinton Foundation or speech fees that appeared to come around the time of favorable decisions by the State Department under Clinton's leadership.

The email investigation was later closed in 2016 on the recommendation of then FBI Director James Comey but Donald Trump and other senior Republicans have repeatedly called for further scrutiny into Mrs Clinton's actions.

The FBI has been quietly investigating the Clinton Foundation for months, reviving a probe that was dialed back during the 2016 election amid tensions between Justice Department prosecutors and FBI agents about the politically charged case, according to people familiar with the matter.

The FBI and the Department of Justice have not delivered an official statement regarding an active investigation.

The probe is focused on whether Hillary Clinton or her husband exchanged policy favors for donations to the foundation, The Hill reported.

But Mr Sessions at the time told a Senate hearing there was no basis to appoint a special counsel to investigate the "Uranium One" sale.

"The fundamental thing is you cannot be secretary of state of the United States of America and use that position to extort or seek contributions to your private foundation", he told CNN's Alisyn Camerota on "New Day" in 2016.

USA media outlets including the New York Times in recent years have scrutinised the Clinton Foundation.

Founded in 1997 by former US President Bill Clinton, the Clinton Foundation has become a multi-billion dollar organisation.

Clinton's chief spokesman, Nick Merrill, on Friday morning excoriated the Federal Bureau of Investigation for re-opening the case, calling the probe "disgraceful" and suggesting it was nothing more than a political distraction from President Trump's Russian Federation controversies. But, because of its global donor base and Hillary Clinton's former position as America's top diplomat, it also faced questions about contributions from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Algeria.
