Helena Bonham Carter to play Princess Margaret in 'The Crown'

Helena Bonham Carter to play Princess Margaret in 'The Crown'

Helena Bonham Carter is gearing up to play Princess Margaret in The Crown.

The eccentric English actress has apparently been lined up to star alongside Olivia Colman's Queen Elizabeth II when the roles are re-cast for season three. Bonham Carter made a career out of playing rebels, royals, and corset queens back in her Merchant Ivory days, and this role represents a ideal opportunity to roll all three character types into one famously magnetic woman.

The Crown won't be Bonham Carter's first time joining the royal family onscreen.

The show is reportedly "near a deal" to have Helena take on the role in the show's third season, taking over for Vanessa Kirby, who played Margaret in the first two seasons.

"You'll forget all about me and the rest of the cast".

It will also introduce audiences to Camilla Shand, who met Prince Charles at polo match in 1971; the couple dated until Charles left for a naval posting in 1973. But as synonymous as Foy, Matt Smith, Kirby, and the others have become with their roles, they have worthy successors.

So what else can we expect from Season 3?

This post contains mild spoilers for The Crown's second season.

"In Season 3, without giving anything away-it's on the record, it's history-we'll see the breakup of this extraordinary marriage between Margaret and Snowdon", he said. The Queen's sister Margaret is now played by Vanessa Kirby. "I've morphed into someone far better-looking than I".

The Crown might have its new Princess Margaret. Bonham Carter would be a flawless fit for it, and based on what we know about Princess Margaret there is plenty of meaty material to come.

Kirby confessed to Variety that she only researched her character up to 1964, which is the year Season 2 ends.
