HP Issues Recall of 50000 Laptop Batteries Due to Fire Risk

The recall is in response to eight reports of batteries "overheating, melting, or charring", HP says. Canada is announcing the recall of lithium-ion batteries available with HP laptops and portable workstations as they may overheat, posing a risk of burns and fire.

According to the CPSC, consumers should immediately visit HP's recall page to find out if their battery is among those affected by the issue. The technology company is providing free battery replacements.

Affected laptops include the HP Probook 65x, HP x360 310 G2, HP ENVY m6, HP Pavilion x360, HP 11 notebook computers, and HP ZBook mobile workstations.

The computer maker is providing battery replacement services by an authorized technician at no cost.

The firm says (via Digital Trends): "If the validation process identifies a battery as being eligible for replacement, the BIOS update should be applied, and the system should be rebooted".

HP released the table below showing which models are prone to the fault. "Accepting Battery Safety Mode causes the battery to discharge and to cease future charging until Battery Safety Mode is disabled. For this reason, it is extremely important to check whether your battery is affected", HP said in a message posted on its website. "HP strongly recommends accepting Battery Safety Mode".
