Halep lands Shenzhen Open title

World No. 1 Simona Halep won her first title of the new tennis season after defeating Katerina Siniakova in the final of Shenzhen Open here on Saturday.

"It was a tough match, I know that she's a very strong player and in the second set, you could see that she was improving her game".

Halep managed to break Begu twice in the first set. "I was strong enough to hit the ball (well) in the end". "It was a tough one", Halep said.

Meanwhile, top seed Caroline Wozniacki won two matches in just over four hours to set up a final against second seed Julia Gorges at the Auckland Classic.

Former world No.1 Maria Sharapova was dumped out in the semifinals of the Shenzhen Open, losing in three sets to holder Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic on Friday.

I always enjoy playing here and it's going to be a big challenge tomorrow.

The five-times grand slam champion committed 22 unforced errors in the match but stepped up her game at decisive moments of the contest to get past her spirited rival.

Maria Sharapova of Russian Federation hits a return against Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic during their women's singles semi-final match at the WTA Shenzhen Open tennis tournament in Shenzhen in China's southern Guangdong province on Friday.

"I'm so happy. You could see the emotions after I finally won the last point".
