FIR filed against journalist for report about breach of Aadhar data

FIR filed against journalist for report about breach of Aadhar data

So there no security issues now?' Oza asked.

In addition to several reported security breaches, leaks from government websites, portals running scam enrollment centres, selling of Aadhaar data to private companies at throwaway prices - now revealed to be as low as Rs 500 - it seems Aadhaar has become a monstrously ridiculous security joke for all.

"Privacy is an important issue".

Denying the allegation, the UIDAI statement said that it has "given the said search facility for the objective of grievance redressal to the designated personnel and state government officials to help residents only by entering their Aadhaar number/EID". The Attorney-General, while defending the move to make Aadhaar mandatory for PAN cards, told the apex court that "one can not have an absolute right over his or her body".

The Congress party said it was the Narendra Modi government's "arrogance of power" at its worst and their intention on privacy was thoroughly exposed and "right to privacy" is mocked and flouted with impunity.

The Unique Identification Authority of India's (UIDAI's) response to a The Tribune report last week that detailed an alleged data breach in the Aadhaar programme has moved from unsatisfactory to counterproductive.

The reporter has been booked under IPC Sections 419 (punishment for cheating under impersonation), 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery), 471 (using a forged document) and also under sections of the IT Act and the Aadhaar Act. Charges were been registered under Section 66 of the Information Technology Act and Section 36/37 of the Aadhaar Act.

The Tribune, in a news report, had said reporter Rachna Khaira was able to access any Aadhaar number and "instantly get all particulars that an individual may have submitted to the UIDAI" by paying just Rs 500 through PayTm.

FIR filed against journalist for report about breach of Aadhar data

An investigation by The Tribune purportedly showed that anyone's Aadhaar information could be bought via WhatsApp for Rs500 paid digitally, while access to software for printing the Aadhaar card costs an extra Rs300 (See: Your Aadhaar details are up for sale, price: Rs500).

According to the original report by The Tribune, which unearthed the racket that is believed to have started almost six months ago, administrator login IDs and passwords needed to gain access to the UIDAI portal could be acquired for only around $7.8 (INR 500).

The service provided unrestricted access to details for any of more than one billion Aadhaar numbers. The service was restricted to post offices and designated banks to avoid any security breach in November a year ago. "As UIDAI maintains complete log and traceability of the facility, the legal action including lodging of FIR against the persons involved in the instant case is being done", the statement further read.

Justifying its stance, UIDAI said criminal proceedings have been initiated as it was an act of unauthorised access.

The authority said it had given search facility for the goal of grievance redressal to designated personnel and state government officials to help residents only by entering their 12-digit Aadhaar numbers.

"It has given search facility for the objective of grievance redressal to designated personnel and state government officials to help residents".

However, the Editor's Guild of India promptly condemned the action taken by the UIDAI.
