Iranian tanker burns, spills oil after collision off China's coast

An Iranian oil tanker carrying gas condensate collided with a Chinese cargo ship and exploded in the eastern coasts of China, Kasra Nouri, spokesman for the Iranian oil ministry, said January 7.

The tanker's 32 crew members including 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshi sailors were missing in the incident.

The Chinese and South Korean Coast Guard's are responding.

Chinese authorities have dispatched eight ships for the search and rescue operation, while South Korea have sent a plane and coastguard ship to help.

The ministry said all 21 Chinese crew members were rescued from the damaged cargo vessel.

State-run China Central Television reported Sunday evening that the tanker was still floating and burning, and that oil was visible in the water. "There is an oil slick and we are pushing forward with rescue efforts".

State media CCTV showed pictures of the tanker ablaze and billowing plumes of thick dark smoke.

The Iranian tanker, Sanchi, is ablaze and leaking oil after colliding with the Hong Kong-registered vessel CF Crystal. The tanker was carrying 136,000 tons (nearly one million barrels) of condensate and headed for South Korea.

Oil tanker SANCHI, owned by an Iranian shipping company, collided with a cargo ship.

Hanwa Total is a 50-50 partnership between the Seoul-based Hanwha Group and the French oil giant Total.

Hanwha Total was not immediately available for comment.

It's the second collision for a ship from the National Iranian Tanker Co.in less than a year and a half.

There was a collision involving an NITC-operated supertanker in the Singapore Strait in August 2016, but there was no loss of life or pollution.
