Fire breaks out at Bengaluru pub, 5 people charred to death

At least 5 people were killed after a fire broke out at the Kailash bar-cum-restaurant in the Kalasipalya area of Bengaluru during the early hours of Monday.

The deceased were workers of the restaurant and they were reportedly sleeping inside the bar when the blaze started. The victims were identified as Swami (23), Prasad (20), Mahesh, all natives of Tumakaru, Manjunath (45) from Hassan and Keerthi (24) from Mandya.

Reddi said preliminary investigations had revealed that Kailash bar had no exhaust vents or fire extinguishers - both mandatory for a bar licence - and just one narrow staircase. The fire department sent two fire tenders and a rescue vehicle after the blaze was reported.

RV Dayashankar, owner of Bengaluru's Kailash bar restaurant, where a massive fire broke out last night, has been absconding after a call from the police.

The fire incident in the pub city and tech hub occurred about 10 days after a fire in a rooftop pub claimed 14 lives in Mumbai on December 29. "We will include all the relevant charges once we get the reports", he said.

Karnataka home minister Ramalinga Reddy told reporters at the spot that it was the responsibility of the owner to look after the safety of his employees. Mayor Sampath Raj ordered the city civic body to carry out fire safety audits of all high-rise and commercial buildings.
