Ford's Diesel F-150: 30 MPG on the Highway

Ford's Diesel F-150: 30 MPG on the Highway

Ford's best-selling full-size pickup truck will be powered by a diesel engine for the first time in its 70-year history.

For those looking for towing capacity and fuel economy in their full-size pickup, Ford Motor Co. announced a sixth engine option for the 2018 F-150: a 3.0L V6 Power Stroke turbo diesel.

Those are the sort of conditions were diesels shine, noted David Filipe, Ford Vice President of Global Powertrain, whose team oversaw the development of the F-150's new Power Stroke diesel.

Fleet customers can order the diesel F-150 in SuperCrew with a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed and the SuperCab with the 6.5-foot bed.

Digging deeper, the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 is not a clean-sheet design: It shares its basic engine block with previous diesel-powered Land Rovers and Range Rovers.

The new diesel engine is one of two additional powertrains coming to the F-150 to augment its mainstay EcoBoost turbocharged gasoline engines.

Ford is pairing the engine with its SelectShift 10-speed automatic transmission.

Diesels have always been a popular option with buyers of heavy-duty trucks, like the Ford Super Duty line.

For decades, the Power Stroke nomenclature has been synonymous with the Super Duty lineup of heavy-duty pickup trucks Ford produces. The oil burner is the latest addition to an otherwise all-petrol range that includes the three V6 engines - 2.7 litre Ecoboost, 3.3 litre Ti-VCT and 3.5 litre EcoBoost - as well as a 5.0 litre Ti-VCT V8. But they've been rare in the more mainstream half-ton models, such as the F-150.

As it is a premium engine option, customers can expect to pay several thousand more than the cost of the base petrol engine, depending on trim. The company indicates that the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel may weight about 620 pounds, being heavier than the 3.5 -liter EcoBoost.

The 2018 Ford F-150 Power Stroke delivers peak torque at 1,750 rpm, with output hitting a best-in-class 440 lb-ft of torque and a best-in-class 250 horsepower. There's also fuel-saving Stop-Start, a feature that will now become standard on all F-150 models. Dual grille shutters can open and close automatically, enhancing aerodynamics for better fuel economy or optimizing airflow for more power.

Considering that Ford sold almost 900,000 F-150s in 2017, about 300,000 more than the Chevrolet Silverado, its nearest competitor, that would be no small feat.

Overall, automakers sold 2.4 million full-size pickup trucks previous year, an increase of 5.6 percent compared with 2016.
