HP forced to recall laptop batteries due to fire hazard

HP forced to recall laptop batteries due to fire hazard

One report of a minor injury involving a first degree burn to the hand has also been documented.

The affected devices include the company's line of ProBook, Envy, and Pavilion computers, as well as the ZBook mobile workstation.

So far over 50,000 devices have been affected in just the United States and Canada, with HP saying that 15 models of its laptops sold worldwide between December 2015 and December 2017, along with any replacements purchased from HP or its authorised suppliers, could be hit. The company said on Thursday (4 December) that it is initiating the voluntary safety recall and replacement programme for batteries that were included in select units sold globally between December 2015 and December 2017.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is voluntarily recalling batteries in some of their electronics for safety concerns.

The company says you can also order a free replacement battery, and HP will then send a technician to your home to install it for free.

There's also a BIOS update that puts the battery into "Battery Safe Mode" to prevent it from operating in a unsafe way.

With customer safety as a key priority, HP is providing a new BIOS update that will place the affected battery in "Battery Safety Mode".

Battery safe mode discharges the installed battery, meaning it'll only work if the laptop is plugged into a mains power supply, bypassing the battery itself. Until receiving a replacement, customers will simply need to connect their laptop to a power adaptor to use it.

For customers with further questions, HP has set up a detailed FAQ on the battery recall. The company is recalling its laptop and workstation computers due to the risk they could burst into flames from overheating.

List of HP products affected by issue.

According to the recall notice, the issues came to light after eight customers reported battery packs overheating or melting. HP says it "strongly recommends" using this mode if you're affected.
