Pyongyang Names Delegation to Attend Talks with South Korea

The officials will discuss the North's possible participation in next month's PyeongChang Olympics, among other topics.

The 2018 Winter Olympic was scheduled for February 9-25 at South Korea's county of PyeongChang in the eastern Gangwon province.

January 8, 2018 "We plan to discuss matters on the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympics, as well as matters related to improving inter-Korean ties".

She said before the United States would engage in serious talks with North Korea, Pyongyang would have to end its missile tests "for a significant amount of time" and be willing to discuss ending its use of nuclear weapons.

The two Koreas have been separated by the world's most heavily militarized border since the Korean War ended in a stalemate in 1953.

(.) The breakthrough call between Seoul and Pyongyang came last week after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's New Year's address and the reopening of a communication hotline at Panmunjeom.

Seoul responded with an offer of a high-level dialogue, and last week the hotline between the neighbours was restored after being suspended for nearly two years. The DPRK accepted it without any change of the dialogue venue and time that South Korea had proposed.

South Korea will announce Tuesday its position on a deal with Japan over "comfort women" forced to work in Japanese wartime military brothels, the Foreign Ministry said, an agreement meant to "finally and irreversibly" settle the issue when adopted two years ago.

During a different Sunday talk show interview, CIA Director Mike Pompeo also came to the president's defense, telling Fox News that the nuclear button tweet was "entirely consistent with what we're trying to communicate" to the North Korean leader.

The DPRK could demand the halt of the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises this year in return for Pyongyang's suspension of provocation to keep the inter-Korean dialogue mood alive.

Analysts say tensions could flare again after the Olympics, with USA and South Korean troops carrying out their delayed drills, and North Korea likely responding with new weapons tests.

The tourism project to the DPRK's scenic resort of Mount Kumgang, launched in 1998, has been suspended since a South Korean female tourist was shot dead in July 2008 by a DPRK soldier after allegedly venturing into an off-limit area.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha will deliver a statement at 2 p.m. Tuesday, the ministry said Monday.
